Souls Harbor: A Band You Have Probably Heard Before

There is a chance you have heard them on satellite radio or Yahoo Launchcast before. They are sponsored by Jagermeister, ad have shared the stage with such heavy hitters as Slayer, Godsmack, Killswitch Engage, Seether and Three Days Grace.

Sounds like the resume of a mainstream national band right? Wrong.

That is the resume of South Carolina’s own Souls Harbor. No, they don’t have a fancy record label, or nationwide tours, but what they do have is kick ass rock music and a dedicated fan base. It still confused me to this date why no label has scooped these guys up, so labels if you’re reading, it’s time to jump on the bandwagon.

Their debut opus, Take No Thought of the Morrow, is finally complete. If you are looking for a new rock band to wrap your ears around and hurt your neck headbanging to, then Souls Harbor is waiting for you.

I had the chance to catch up with the bands frontman and vocalist, Doug Marshall, in order to get some answers to such questions as what inspired them to write the new record, hoe they made a powerful friend in the business and just where we can expect to see them the rest of the year.

AtHome: Tell me about the recording process of the new record.
Doug Marshall: The recording process was more a less a process that started about four months prior to us being in the studio, with writing just pretty much guitar riffs and some choruses but not writing full songs as of yet except for two tracks. We went in the studio pretty much with an open slate and put the pieces together during the first weeks of the studio. We then had a great foundation for the songs to be completed with production and lyrics and we came up with what we think is a very strong EP. We kind of came out of our comfort zone and brought our project, we think, to another level!

AH: How did you go about hooking up with Corey Lowery?
Marshall: Through mutual friends he came to a show of ours and we kind of hit it off after that! We wanted to work with him for a bit and we decided to bring him to Charleston, SC to work with and co-produce our EP with Eric Bass!

AH: Who handled the drumming for the disc? Do you have a permanent drummer?
Marshall: Pauly Huck from a Charleston based band called Number One Contender played on the EP and did an incredible job! We do have a drummer now named Justin Long from Hilton Head, SC. We went through some tough times not being able to find a drummer and had a lot of help from some other drummers who filled in to help us make it to where we are now. We definitely have had some weird experiences with our past drummers who for one reason or another are not with us, thank God! By the way thanks to Eric Rickert, Paul Huck and Zane Lewis for their help!

AH: What was the inspiration to write the record?
Marshall: Inspiration was sparked by many things but if I were to pinpoint one specific thing it’s pretty much the famous saying “Carpe Diem,” seize the day, live today and forget about tomorrow. In so many words live every day as if it were the last and up yours to the people who try to hold you back!

AH: Did you have a certain sound in mind for it?
Marshall: EPIC!!!

AH: Did your songwriting process change going for this record?
Marshall: Very open minded to bring in anything and everything that would make the songs an experience to where when someone hears it they are drawn in. We wanted to experiment with bringing in different instruments, different sounds and a lot of powerful moments in the songs that let you feel what we are saying and playing!

AH: How do you think the record turned out?
Marshall: Yes being biased, but very well done and I being the singer of the band I am very proud to be singing over what my band members played and wrote! They made it easy for me to portray what I wanted to say!

AH: Do you think that this new EP is something you feel comfortable shopping to labels?
Marshall: For sure! We think out of all the other recordings we’ve done that this one is by far going to be hard to pass up. We will make sure the local radio stations get the first ear on it and then hopefully things will go from there. You can chase the dream but sometimes you have to let things take its course.

AH: What can we expect from you guys the rest of the year?
Marshall: Playing, writing, recording some more and did I say playing! We are a live band and hate sitting around, we play as much as we can and wherever we can to build up that grass roots following. The more shows you play the better the band gets and the more people you can connect with. We plan on playing the Northeast, Southeast and the Midwest as much as we can until hopefully we can be put on an extensive tour! We have some things in the works as we speak of possibly doing some pretty cool mini tours so keep your ears open and your eyes open and hopefully you’ll be hearing a lot of Souls Harbor in 08-09!
