Tanning Lotion 101: By: Jonathan Bille |

No one needs to convince you on the use of tanning lotion. If you want a better tan, at a faster rate, with a lessened risk of damage from the sun, than tanning lotion is the way to go. But which tanning lotion do you choose, and what are all the different types of tanning lotion for?
To start, you need to know that there are three basic types of tanning lotion. The first, outdoor tanning lotion, just as the name suggests, is for use outside and usually is more of a sunscreen than it is a tanner. The second, indoor tanning lotion is intended to be used while using indoor tanning equipment. It is designed to speed up the indoor tanning process by increasing melanin in the body. The third, sunless tanning lotion is designed for people who want the look of a natural tan without exposure to the sun or with the use of indoor tanning equipment.
Then there is the question of skin types. There are six different skin types and you should choose a tanning lotion based on your specific skin type. The lotion you buy should indicate which skin type the lotion is intended for.
Skin Type I: are the people with light white skin, usually of English heritage. Skin type I people burn easily and do not tan well.
Skin Type II: are the people of English and Scandinavian heritage who can tan, but who also can burn.
Skin Type III: is the most common skin type in America. Skin Type III people can tan easily but can also experience a moderate burn. These people are usually of Central European heritage and are characterized by brown eyes and dark hair.
Skin Type IV: are people of Hispanic, Mediterranean or Oriental descent. These people rarely burn and tan easily.
Skin Type V: are people of American Indian, Indian or African heritage. These people rarely burn and tan easily.
Skin Type VI: are people of African or Aboriginal descent. These people never burn and can tan despite their dark skin.
Now you need to consider some of the ingredients used in tanning lotions. With sunless tanning lotion, the main ingredient is a product called DHA. The greater the amount of DHA in the lotion, the darker your tan will be. DHA is also used in some indoor tanning lotion. Here it is usually used as a bronzer to kick start the tan more than it is used to deepen the tan.
Other things to look for in tanning lotion is Vitamin A and vitamin E. Both of these are used as anti-aging vitamins that have been put in the lotion to help moisturize your skin. In addition, when shopping for indoor tanning lotion, be sure to look for a lotion that contains tyrosine. Tyrosine helps to keep the pores in your skin clean.
If you still have questions about which tanning lotion is right for you, consult with one of your local beauty supply stores. They should be able to guide you to the perfect product for your skin type and tanning method.
