Floral Decorations By Melissa J Wantuck |
| |
The final part of wedding flower selection is choosing the floral decorations you’ll have at the ceremony and reception sites. Many of the decorations are interchangeable so you don’t have to choose a large floral arrangement for the church and then a second for the reception. You can also have arrangements customized to fit both locations.
Here are some terms that refer to specific floral decorations:
Centerpiece A floral centerpiece is designed to be placed in the middle of a table and viewed from any side. Centerpieces may be placed at the head table, one made for each dinner table, placed on dessert or display tables, or small ones assembled for the wedding cake.
Floral Arrangement A floral arrangement sounds a lot like a centerpiece but floral arrangements are typically meant to be viewed from the front and sides only. Many peak at the top-center of the arrangement and flowers flow down and out over the holder. Floral arrangements are placed on alters, hall tables, and windows, anywhere that has a wall or tall-backed furniture piece behind it.
Garland Garlands are swags of any of the following: flowers, greenery, ribbons toile and lights. They can be placed on the front of alters, along the sides of pews, on the front of the head table, around the cake table or dessert table or beverage table, and above or below windows.
Topiary Topiaries come in many different designs but the simplest topiary structure has a base with a pole that extends up from the base and then a ball of flowers and greenery is wrapped around the ball. Other topiaries have a different shape other than a ball, or more shapes on top of the first ball.
Wreath A wreath can be a circle of greenery, flowers, ribbons, toile, etc. and of any size. Wreaths can be hung from windows, wall sconces, or placed on top of pew stands around the globed candles on top of them.
Cake Flowers If you wish to have any flowers added to your wedding cake, have your florist design these separate from the rest of the decorations. These may have to go to your baker at a separate time than when the decorations are delivered. Cake flowers could be greens or single flowers, or any type of floral decoration.
Any floral decoration you choose will be a lasting piece beyond your wedding day. Be sure to instruct that the flower decorations are kept and you can choose to give them away. Have a floral arrangement placed at your church in honor of your wedding. Give centerpieces and floral arrangements to parents and grandparents. Share decorations with members of your wedding party, close friends and family. Centerpieces on tables can be given to someone at the table. Ideas for choosing the recipient are to honor the couples at each table who have the an anniversary closest to your wedding day. Give a centerpiece to the longest-married couples or one to the most recently married.
Save any floral decoration that was made from silk flowers for your own home. You don’t have to save them all, but keep at least one as a memento of your wedding day.
