CoCo Montoya and Johnny A. to play at World Cafe Live

Blues guitarist and vocalist CoCo Montoya will perform at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia along with Johnny A. on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 in support of his most recent album, Dirty Deal, released in 2007.

After Montoya saw Albert King opening up for a Creedence Clearwater Revival/Iron Butterfly concert in 1969, his life was turned upside-down. He claims the music went right to his soul, grabbing him so emotionally to the point of tears. From then on, he knew he wanted to play the blues so he could share his experience with others.

Montoya began his career in the mid 1970’s when he was asked by legendary bluesman Albert Collins to play a gig as his drummer. Collins took Montoya under his wing as a mentor and began teaching him all the secrets to be successful in playing the blues. Years later, John Mayall stumbled upon Montoya at a jam session and was immediately impressed with his skill level. Mayall recruited Montoya to become the guitarist in the band Bluesbreakers, filling the shoes of Eric Clapton.

Montoya began his career as a bandleader in 1993. Since then, he has released five albums and has performed at major concerts and festivals all over the world. After the 1995 release of his album, Gotta Mind to Travel, he was nominated in 1996 for four Blues Music Awards and walked away with the award for Best New Blues Artist.

With an average of over 150 tour dates a year, Montoya continues to draw crowds and pack clubs. He has played major festivals, including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, The Chicago Blues Festival, The San Francisco Blues Festival and Canada’s International Jazz Festival ranking him among the best guitarists and vocalists in the blues scene.

Johnny A. also began his music career as a drummer. After attending Boston's Berklee College of Music he found the guitar to be his instrument of choice. In 1994, the Gibson Guitar Company decided to endorse Johnny A. after becoming aware of his unique talent. They honored him with his very own signature Johnny A. guitar. Johnny A. is well-known for his album, Sometime Tuesday Morning, which is regarded by many as one of the greatest instrumental guitar records of all time.

CoCo Montoya will perform with Johnny A. in Downstairs Live at World Cafe Live on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at 7:30 PM, doors open at 6:00 PM. Tickets are $40. For more information on CoCo Montoya, and other upcoming performers at World Cafe Live, visit www.worldcafelive.com.
